We give a lot of lip service to providing patients with evidence about the treatment options available to them so that they may make an “informed decision” in alignment with their beliefs and values.  The key word being the evidence about the treatment (this is ESPECIALLY important when the evidence is un-clear, not well developed and/or the side effects may be highly undesirable).  But do we truly believe it?  This article in the NY Times is one of the best I have ever read on the topic and I recommend it highly.
